What is 'Plug & Play'?

This book utilizes a unique 'plug and play' learning method.

The idea is to not simply memorize vocabulary words, but also to learn those words as a part of a singular set expression.

By doing so, we give those new vocabulary words context.

How it works

First: Set Expressions

Each chapter in 'Plug & Play Korean Vocab' utilizes one set expression.

Let's take a look at an example of the plug & pay method at work:

In Chapter 15, the set expression is "X에 갔어요.” [read 'X-eh gass-uh-yo']

This expression means “I went to X” (Literally, “X-to went”).

The chapter first introduces this expression with a simple dialogue

between Person A and Person B.

Person A asks the question "어디에 갔어요?" or "Where did you go?"

and Person B responds with the set expression of the chapter X에 갔어요.” or "I went to X,

but here they've swapped X out for the vocabulary word 슈퍼  (supermarket).

Then: Vocab Plug & Play

ch15vocab.jpg

Chapter 15 introduces the nine key vocabulary words above

to accompany the set expression X에 갔어요.” or "I went to X.

Any of these words can be swapped into the set expression in place of X.

Once we take 슈퍼 or "supermarket" out of the sentence

we can then plug 바다 or "beach/ocean" into the sentence in its place.

Why should I 'plug & play' to learn vocab?

Memorizing Vocabulary Words

Learning vocabulary words on their own in a vacuum can be difficult. However, when we plug those words into a simple set expression and give them a more specific context, it lets us tie them to a scenario in the real world. This ultimately makes them less abstract and easier to recall

Beginners Welcome!

This book is primarily for beginners and those looking to learn vocabulary in context.

Even total beginners can use it thanks to the strong introductory sections - that being chapter one: an introduction to the alphabet and writing system, and chapter two: a collection of useful expressions.

Of course, beginners with some Korean language experience will be able to reinforce vocabulary knowledge using the unique plug-&-play format.

Practice  problems

Each chapter includes reading, writing, speaking, and then listening exercises to help practice and reinforce the set expression with the key vocabulary words.

This order allows learners to first read and become familiar with the expression, then produce the expression slowly in writing, then recall and use the expression while speaking, and finally recognize the form through listening and dictation.

Reading Exercises

Reading Exercises in the book always include short dialogues that makes use of both the key vocab words and the set expression of the chapter.

Each dialogue has a related multiple-choice question.

Writing Exercises

There are a few different types of writing exercises in this book. One example would be an activity where picture prompts encourage you to write an answer using the set expression and related vocabulary word

Speaking Exercises

Speaking exercises give learners the opportunity to practice pronouncing the included phrases. Sometimes there is a related audio track which learners can follow along with. Some speaking exercises require learners to assemble the full expression themselves.

Listening Exercises

There are two types of listening exercises in this book. The first type of exercise includes an audio track where the learner hears a phrase or a short dialogue. They then choose the correct answers to the given questions.

The second type of question is a dictation exercise, wherein learners will listen to an audio track to hear a series of sentences. After each sentence they must write down exactly what they heard.
